Mark Zuckerberg has announced that over the next few months, he’ll be sharing photos of the most advanced technology Facebook is working on globally, and kicking off this set was yesterday’s unveiling of the Luleå data center in the forests of northern Sweden.

The data center uses a variety of natural resources to increase efficiency and save power, and as a whole, is 10% more efficient and uses a whopping 40% less power than traditional data center designs. As the temperature in the area is a freezing 50 degrees (Fahrenheit) on most days, large fans are used to pull in the outside air to naturally warm the servers. The inside of the main building is the size of six football fields, and nearly all the technology in the data center is based on Open Compute Project designs.”
